Will Arnett Blades of GloryThe Canadian-born actor Will Arnett is best known for his role as Gob Bluth in the cult classic Arrested Development, although he has had a significant film and voice acting career as well. Arnett is married to fellow celebrity Amy Poehler, and the two have one child, a son named Archibald. Poehler appeared alongside Arnett in the hit Arrested Development, playing a woman who Arnett's character married in a drunken stupor. Arnett's distinctive voice can be heard all over the place -- from television commercials (he does most of the voice over work for GM car commercials) to video games, TV promos, and movie trailers. In fact, his voice work for GM led to some controversy, and the loss of an acting job. Arnett was slated to be the voice in the Universal Pictures remake of Knight Rider, but GM asked him to step down when it was learned that the famous car K.I.T.T. (for whom Arnett was to provide the "voice) was a Ford Mustang. Apparently, Arnett knows which side of the bread is buttered, and gave in to GM's demands. He was replaced by Val Kilmer.
Arnett attended New York City's famous Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, whose famous alumni include Al Pacino, Mickey Rourke, Adam Sandler, and Dennis Hopper among many other well known names. After graduating from the school, Arnett had a string of failed pilot auditions, including The Underworld, The Mike O'Malley Show, Loomis, and Still Standing. After this string of failures, Arnett "swore off pilots" and began to drink heavily, a problem that was solved in 2000 with the help of a concerned friend. In 2003, Arnett's agent convinced him to audition for one more pilot -- a quirky show called Arrested Development. Not only was Arnett's audition a success, but the show was picked up by Fox for three seasons, and Arnett and his fellow cast members gained a huge cult-like following. Though the show was cancelled by Fox for lack of ratings, the fans clamored for more Arrested Development material, and a film is rumored to be in the works. Arnett won two Primetime Emmys for his work on Arrested Development, and the entire cast of the show was given an award from TV Land called the Future Classics award, in honor of their work on the hilarious television comedy. Arnett has landed several roles in Hollywood both during and since Arrested Development. After appearing in the relative bombs Monster in Law, RV, and Let's Go to Prison, Arnett had his big film break in 2006s animated hit Ratatouille, as the voice of Horst, a stern Sous-chef at a swanky French restaurant. That same year, Arnett had a supporting role in the Will Ferrel / Jon Heder comedy Blades of Glory, a financially successful if a little bit silly comedy about the world of figure skating. Arnett was featured in another Ferrell vehicle, 2008s Semi Pro, which was not quite as successful (or as funny) as Blades of Glory. Arnett has also done voice work in the animated films Horton Hears a Who and the soon to be released films Monsters vs. Aliens, and Despicable Me. Upcoming releases for Arnett include the 2009 Sundance Film Festival entrant Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, based on the story by the late David Foster Wallace -- a film about breakups and gender identities slated for an extremely small release. Films like this prove that Arnett is an actor's actor, more interested in work than in appearing in blockbusters. Other small films Arnett has appeared in include Wristcutters: A Love Story, The Waiting Game, The Acting Class, and Southie. Outside of Arrested Development, Arnett's distinctive look and voice have led to many television appearances, including a double appearance on the smash hit 30 Rock. In 2008, Arnett also made appearances on Fox's King of the Hill and the perennial favorite Sesame Street. Past appearances include Will and Grace, The Sopranos, and Third Watch.
Arnett has earned several awards outside of the mainstream show buiness honors. Conan O'Brien has called him one of his "three favorite guests" of all time (along with Harland Williams and Norm Macdonald). Arnett and Poehler were honored by New York Magazine as New Yorkers of the Year in 2005, and Arnett was recognized by People Magazine as one of the "Future Kings of Comedy". Announced future projects involving Arnett, besides the rumored 2010 film version of Arrested Development, include another romp with Dax Shepard (with whom Arnett made the bomb Let's Go to Prison) entitled Get 'em Wet, the 2010 comedy Most Likely to Succeed about a guy who lies at his high school reunion and must go to great lengths to keep the lie up, and We're the Millers, a comedy featuring Steve Buscemi as a pot dealer who wants to make one last big haul across the Mexican border before retiring. Arnett lives in New York City with his family, and from the looks of it is keeping busy with film and television projects. The next time you see a GM commercial, listen closely to the voice. Do you detect a hint of Gob Bluth? Its most likely Will Arnett. One of the best values on Amazon that I've ever seen is the complete Arrested Development series on DVD. Check it out.
